There are two infirmaries at our school where 1 physician is available in the mornings between 09.00 – 12.00 and 3 nurses throughout the day. The health of students falls under the infirmary's responsibility during school hours. Nurses working at the infirmary may administer medication to students only upon a doctor's instructions.
Parents are notified by the nurses in case of any health problems (i.e. high fever, diarrhea, contagious diseases) that might arise when the student is within the school premises.
Parents of the newly registered students are required to fill out the school's health form and present a health report as well as a certificate of vaccination from the pediatrician, if any, who sees the child regularly. Documents submitted by the parents are put on file. This ensures speedy access to the students' health records when necessary.
The files of students with chronic diseases that require continued treatment contain information on their condition and the treatment they receive, and are updated at the beginning of each semester. Should the parent refuse to provide the crucial information on the emergencies that might arise from the condition and their treatment, this preference is also noted in the file. Upon the consent of the parents, the school doctor contacts the doctor supervising the student's health for an exchange of information on the condition and the treatment. A health report on the diagnosed health condition of the student must be submitted to the school infirmary.
Eyüp District Health Directorate distributes a list of vaccinations for each age group to be administered that year. Parents are notified of the announcement via the Student Services in writing. The parents are required to provide in writing information on whether the student was vaccinated and if they consent to the vaccination of their child at the school. Students whose parents consent are administered the shots by Göktürk Health Center staff.
Parents will send the medication they wish to be given to their child to the infirmary accompanied by a medication use form. Drugs will be registered in the infirmary book and their use followed up. Students who are not deemed fit to attend activities (physical education, movement education, club activities) due to health reasons will be issued a waiver by the infirmary staff. A diet list will be prepared by either the school doctor or nurses for students who are unable to eat the courses offered in the school menu. The student will be provided with the appropriate meal from the diet list.
At the beginning of each semester, in September and March, children will be checked against pediculosis (lice infestation). Controls may also be repeated in other times based on complaints or suspicion. In case of the detection of a contagious disease or an epidemic (i.e. lice, streptococcus angina, chicken pox) parents will be notified of the situation along with an explanatory note prepared by the school doctor about the disease.
At our school, children are informed of oral and dental health and how to protect it by a volunteer dentist. During the "Oral and Dental Health Week" observed annually between November 21 – 27, general dental screenings are conducted on students and informative meetings held in the classrooms.
To protect the health of both our school personnel and students, semi-annual porter inspections (blood, urine, gaita, throat swab), annual chest x-rays and physical examinations of the mess hall staff are carried out by the catering company in accordance with the health code of the Ministry of Health. A copy of the results is submitted to the infirmary by the catering company's food engineer. They are examined by the school doctor and filed.
Samples from school meals are taken by a food engineer on a daily basis. They are kept for 72 hours in 180 gram locked sample bags. Furthermore, the water used by the catering company in main courses, salads, side dishes, desserts, and other meals are tested semi-annually by the catering company in its own laboratories and environmental impact laboratories and a copy of the results are submitted to the infirmary and operations department.
Drinking water is purchased in large bottles and offered in fountains. The supplier is required to have the water put through semi-annual microbiological and chemical analyses by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Health and Social Services, Directorate of Health and Hygiene. The results of the analyses are received from the firm and kept on record. A list of the required medication and health equipment in the infirmary is held in accordance with the Ministry of Education's infirmary standards. The list is posted in the infirmary. Off-list medications are not administered.
